JOINT ROUNDTABLE BETWEEN ENERGY COMMUNITY REGULATORS AND MEDITERRANEAN REGULATORS
Wednesday, September 17, 2014.
The Energy Community Regulatory Board (ECRB) and the Association of Mediterranean Energy Regulators (MEDREG) held their first joint roundtable in Athens, Greece, with a strong focus on investment promotion and customer protection, which are key priorities for both regions.
The meeting was co-chaired by the ECRB President, Branislav Prelevic, and the MEDREG President, Michel Thiollière. “Regional integration of energy markets is a key objective both for ECRB and MEDREG. A sound institutional cooperation is therefore common sense, even more so given the common geographic area covered by our two organizations. Exchanges of information and expertise among regulatory associations help improve the transparency and efficiency of energy markets while reducing barriers to investments in the member countries”, highlighted the two Presidents.
Michel Thiollière explained that MEDREG considers ECRB both as a partner and an inspiration for the institutional development of Mediterranean Regulators. “With the perspective of the establishment of an EU-Mediterranean energy community, MEDREG is working to establish independent authorities in all the countries of the Mediterranean area. In this sense, MEDREG could learn from the ECRB experience to strengthen its own institutional capability in the near future.”
During his speech, the Energy Community Secretariat Director, Janez Kopač, echoed the Presidents’ message. “It is clear that our energy markets are connected in various ways and increased regulatory cooperation between our two regions is becoming more and more important. One of the reform proposals of the Energy Community is to define specific countries and/or regions of strategic interest for the Balkans area. This of course includes the Mediterranean region.”
The participants agreed that opportunities for further cooperation could include exchange of reports between ECRB and MEDREG, joint sessions of the Working Groups and the possibility to hold joint training sessions for their members on topics of common relevance. The participants also decided to hold joint ECRB-MEDREG roundtables on a yearly basis.
Representatives of the Energy Agency of the Republic of Serbia attended the roundtable meeting.
